Getting Your Passport Ready for An International Holiday

Congratulations on taking the first step toward taking a vacation! If you’re planning for your first overseas trip, you’re probably wondering what you need to do to get yourself organised. Well, the best place to start is by getting your passport ready for your international holiday. Here’s how:

Applying for a passport

Do you dream of laying on a beach in Bali, soaking up the sun? Or maybe you’d prefer to explore the history of Rome? Overload on carbs in France? No matter where you want to go, the first thing you need to do is apply for a passport. We recommend doing this before booking any part of your holiday as the application process can take approximately 3-6 weeks. If you’re looking to travel urgently, you may be able to pay an additional fee for priority service (see here for more information on priority service). It’s also important to note that if you already have a passport, you need to check the entry/exit requirements of the country you are planning to visit to ensure you have enough validity left on your existing passport as some countries require up to 6 months.

To start the application process, the easiest way is visit https://www.passports.gov.au and start your application on-line. This way you will be able to track your passports progress. Then print off the check list and visit a local Australia Post office.

Redcliffe Australia Post offices:

You will need to take the checklist with you and original documents that certifies and confirms your Australian citizenship and identity. You will also need to nominate a referee and provide those details on-line.

You can complete the passport application in person at the Post Office but your referee/Guarantor will need to endorse the back of one of the photos.

Photo time!

While at the Post Office applying for your passport, you will also have your photo taken. This will incur an extra fee but is recommended to ensure your image meets the technical requirements to process your passport at international borders. The photos taken are also high-quality and scaled to a specific size to reduce the potential of identity theft, further protecting you while you travel.
